Motor vehicle accidents are not planned. As the recent east Texas accidents highlighted below reveal, a crash can happen in a split second, sometimes under highly improbable circumstances, forever changing the lives of innocent motorists, passengers, and even pedestrians in the process.
Those who are injured (or whose loved ones perish) in a traffic accident caused by another party’s negligent or reckless conduct have a right to file suit in a court of law against the responsible party.
While monetary compensation cannot bring back lost loved ones or undo a permanent disability suffered in a crash, a settlement or judgment can help ease the financial strain caused by a serious accident or a loved one’s wrongful death.
High School Sports Team Hurt in Multi-Vehicle Crash
Several members of a high school track team were injured when an 18-wheeler allegedly swerved across Highway 271 and struck the school bus in which the young athletes were traveling. Another track coach was traveling behind the bus in a separate vehicle that was also hit by the semi. Both the truck driver and the coach who was traveling behind the bus were killed.
Accidents involving either a school bus or a tractor-trailer are, by their very nature, high-risk accidents. To have both a bus and a large truck involved in a single accident is, while not unheard of, unusual. It is likely that litigation will ensue at some point in the future between those who were injured in the wreck and the estate of the trucker and his employer.
Car Falls Off Trailer, Causing Crash
In a separate accident along Loop 49, three people were injured when a car apparently rolled off a trailer being towed by the truck in front of them. Police are investigating the accident, and it is possible that the driver of the truck could face criminal charges in the future (although no charges have been filed yet).
The driver could also be found liable in civil court, should the injured persons be able to prove by a preponderance of the evidence that he or she was negligent in causing the crash.
Car Flies Off Freeway
In yet another rather unique accident, a man was injured when the car in which he was riding allegedly flew off the East Freeway in Houston, falling about 15 feet into a wooded area below. According to police, it is likely that speed was a factor in the accident. The driver died in the accident. A news report describes the vehicle as being “torn apart” as it fell through the trees below.
